The Austrian venue, known for its short yet highly technical layout, provided a demanding challenge for the field. Wharton demonstrated solid pace from the outset, delivering a promising performance in Free Practice before translating that speed into Qualifying. A well-executed session saw the Australian secure P12 on the grid, which, under the reverse-grid regulation, promoted him to pole position for Saturday’s Sprint Race.
Starting from the front, for the second Sprint Race in a row, Wharton managed the race with composure and authority, leading for the majority of the session. He executed a disciplined and effective defensive drive, notably holding off sustained pressure from Ernesto Rivera with precision. However, in the closing stages, rivals with stronger pace began to close in, and despite his efforts, Wharton was overtaken in the final laps. A late drop of additional positions saw him cross the line in P4, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
Sunday’s Feature Race proved more linear, with Wharton maintaining position throughout and ultimately taking the chequered flag in P12 without major events. A post-race call by the stewards ultimately promoted James to P11.
The Austrian round yielded a total of seven points for Wharton, bringing his championship tally to 18 and placing him P14 in the overall standings.
«It was a tough weekend. Compared to Barcelona, we were definitely a little bit on the back foot on the driving side, but at the same time, we made good progress throughout the weekend and had the chance to get on the podium again, but just didn't quite have the pace. A little mistake from my side cost us big time with two laps to go. Then the feature race, again, the pace wasn't quite there, so we have a lot of work to do before Silverstone, but at the same time, if our bad weekend is a P4 in a sprint race, we need to take it. I'm sure that we can build from this and arrive in Silverstone on a track that I know quite well and start on the right foot in FP for the first time this year and really try and put a whole weekend together», James Wharton said.
Attention now shifts to the next round of the season at Silverstone, scheduled for 3–5 July, where Wharton will aim to build on the positives shown in Spielberg.
